In desparate attempt to control population growth, China established a 1 - child policy. Nevertheless, althoughthe policy was effective especially in the larger cities and educated populations, the population continued to grow. Therefore, China also delayed the issuance of marriage certificates until age 25 or older. Why did the 1 - child policy did not immediately reduce the population and does the delay in marriage age help?- Well it is doing something because they only value males in the culture, so they are sending off the females for adoption to other countries or somehow not having them. Apparently it is having an effect. There is going to be some sort of social effect because there will be no women for the Chinese men to marry. The women who have moved to America and Europe are not Chinese in culture and do not want to marry a Chinese Man from China any more so those men will be out of luck. That will help take the poulation down more. This is more of an eithical problem because they use forced abortion if a woman becomes pregant again. This one child thing applies if you adopt a child take on the child of a sibling or anything. You are only allowed one child no matter what. It does not mean one genetic child. It means one child. Reproduction is exponetial and nothing shows up immediately. It takes time for trends to start showing. Please remember China is a comunist country and these ideas cannot be implemented everywhere thank fully. Forcing women to have abortions is not someting that goes on in the USA and the UK
- As humans we are always focused on the immediate. Expecting momentum to stop immediately is silly. China's policy is working now. the projected growth rate from 2000 to 2050 is close to zero. It is shown that increasing marriage ages lowers total births for women. So does education level
- In China the 1 child policy was established in the 70s, and there were already so many people that it would take a long time for it to come into effect. Also, they say that if both your mother and your father are the only child in their family, that they are alowed to have 2 kids. If a family has more than one child and they are not supposed to, they are fined. Another reason could be that the Chinese are alowed to leave their baby at the hospital no questions asked if it has any "defects", so that they can have the perfect baby. They are aloud to do this as many times as they want, and because of it, the orphanages are filling up. I don't really know any thing about the marriage, but I wouldn't imagine that it would have any effect
- This policy needs time to take effect. China is a large country and policing is a handfull. One must not forget cultural beliefs. Many believe a male is more productive than a female. So in turn if the family receive a girl as a first born many families will try again for a boy and it is better left to the imagination what happens to the girl. The marriage certificate issue will also take time to take effect. In th UK, many women are holding off a family for a career and this aids in the explanation for it's declining birth rate.
